I was cruising through the internet until there were people beginning to post information and details regarding this recent unfortunate turn of events that had rocked Lebanon, a country situated in the Middle East. It became serious and deeply mind-boggling that I was curious to study and research why this predicament had transpired. After some considerations, could it have possibly be a political agenda? This was brought forth by Ahmad Faezal, a local author of books pertaining to the Crusade Wars. He claims that it was derived from the court decision on the former Prime Minister, Rafic Harici's case and coincidentally, the explosion erupted near his former residence. The perpetrators whom murdered Harici were to be given verdicts without their presence soon on 7th of August, 2020 which was a few days the explosion ignited on the 4th of August. Other suggests that it was the handiwork of Hezbollah, a ultra-religious-militaristic group in the country.
Before we traverse into the convoluted sets of theories proposed by him, we shall deal with the current status quo that had occurred. According to Al-Jazeera, at least 73 had died and around 3,7000-4,000 were injured due to the explosion. It is expected that those statistics would increase, likely because of the toxic gases emitted. Lebanon's Internal Security Chief, Abbas Ibrahim states that it originated from a nearby blast that was located at a port area of the city, storing lethal explosives which was ammonium nitrate that was seized back in 2014, (Reuters).
The number of the stockpile was estimated to be 2,700 tons (the alleged chemical substance). It has the effect of propagating reddish-brown tones of hazardous gases. That chemical is used for fertilizer and the creation of incendiaries or explosive ordinances in warfare. The explosion might have been caused by faulty-wiring or where the munitions were caught on fire.
The detonation brought massive shock-waves across the city, carpet-flatting the city, dilapidated buildings and invigorated into a tall mushroom cloud. Windows were shattered, the impetus force of the explosion ravaged the landscape, a man standing in the face of a hurling wind would indeed face the eyes of death. Countries all over the world, including Malaysia, France, Germany, Iran, Italy, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Kingdom and even the United States had sent humanitarian aid to recuperate the frail condition.
The conspiracy and theory that could be corroborated is that, since the United States had sent aid, surely there is a deceptive intention behind this, perhaps ulterior motives. We may view of the numerous times the United States had attempted to intervene in the politics of the Middle East, a proxy war between Saudi Arabia, Iran and Russia.
At the White House, President Donald Trump states that "The United States stands ready to assist Lebanon. We will be there to help. It looks like a terrible attack."
He even further to congregate with U.S military officials and argued that, "I met with some of our great generals and they just seem to feel that it was an attack. This was not some kind of a manufacturing-explosion-type of event. This was, seems to be, according to them - they would know better than I would - they seem to think that it was an attack. A bomb of some kind."
Though, the Lebanese authorities did not state if there were terrorist or criminal interference, President Michel Aoun stood firm that anyone who was responsible for the detonation whether it was intentional or not shall be liable for their offence. Additionally, this cannot be treated as a nuclear wage of assails, as Vipin Narang, studying on nuclear proliferation and strategy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology refutes the claims that it was a nuclear bomb. This is also affirmed by Martin Pfeiffer, PhD candidate at the University of New Mexico. A proper indication of a nuclear fallout would initate from a blinding white flash and in this case, it was not.
These are just theories that can be appreciated before time unfolds the truth. For now, we should be kept updated with this fiasco. Let's pray that this situation would never happen in our beloved, peaceful country, Malaysia.
